Steven Tyler made a surprise return to “American Idol” on Thursday night by showing up in drag to audition for the panel.

The Aerosmith rocker, who quit the TV show last year, caused a sensation when he attended try-outs in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma wearing a dress.

The “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” singer donned a full face of make-up, padded bra and high heels to audition as sassy “Pepper,” but was soon called out by judge Mariah Carey.

After he was told he would not progress to the next round, Tyler lamented, “I tried so hard!” but added, “I just wanted to come by and say hello, everybody. I love you. Good luck with this year!”
