Randy Travis pleads guilty to drunk driving

Embattled country star Randy Travis has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated (DWI) following his arrest in August.

The singer was taken into custody on suspicion of DWI after cops found him lying naked on a stretch of road in Grayson County, Texas, after crashing his car in a construction area.

On Thursday he entered a guilty plea in court and was sentenced to two years’ probation and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.

Travis faces 180 days behind bars if he fails to stay out of trouble for two years.

He was also ordered to spend 30 days at an in-patient treatment facility and must also complete 100 hours of community service.

His car will also be fitted with a special ignition interlock device, which measures the driver’s blood alcohol level and prevents the engine from starting up if he is intoxicated, reports EOnline.com.

District Attorney Joe Brown admitted Travis’ punishment is “considerably more than is typically received on a DWI case” due to his belligerent behavior at the time of his arrest.

Brown adds, “First time DWI defendants are rarely forced into in-patient treatment. He will be unable to leave the facility for 30 days. His fine and community service requirements are more than double what is usually received, and his probation term is the maximum available, and longer than the usual 18 months.”

“All of that is appropriate in light of his behavior with the officers. I spoke at length with the officers involved, and they were in agreement with the outcome. We are all hopeful that Mr. Travis is on the road to recovery.”
