Denzel Washington heading back to Broadway

Denzel Washington is reportedly set to follow in the footsteps of Sidney Poitier and Sean “Diddy” Combs by starring in a Broadway revival of “A Raisin in the Sun.”

The Hollywood actor won a coveted Tony Award in 2010 for his role in a Broadway production of “Fences” and he recently admitted he is keen to get back on the New York stage.

Editors at the New York Post now report Washington will return to the Big Apple’s theatre district in a new version of Lorraine Hansberry’s play “A Raisin in the Sun” in the role of disenchanted limousine driver Walter Lee Younger, which was originated by Poitier in the original 1959 Broadway production.

Rapper-turned-actor Combs also played the part in a 2004 stage revival and he reprised the role in a 2008 TV film.

Washington recently said of his Broadway plans, “In the last 10 years, I’ve gone back to Broadway twice now. I’m going back next year. I did Fences two years ago and Julius Caesar… I’d go off-Broadway in a minute.”
